It is pleiomorphic, predominantly coccoid bacterium that ranges in diameter from 0.5 to 1.5 ?m. P. salmonis belongs to a new family of Piscirickettsiae within the class of ?-proteobacteria and it is the etiological agent of salmonid rickettsial septicaemia (SRS) or piscirickettsiosis. This disease has been identified in salmonids and non salmonids species.
