Bax belongs to Bcl-2 protein family and accelerates the apoptosis by binding to the repressor Bcl-2. It can form oligomers and targets mitochondrial membrane inducing an increase in the membrane permeability which leads to the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria and the activation of the caspase pathway.
