R.salmoninarum is a small Gram-positive, non motile rod bacillus and is an obligate pathogen. It is the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease (BKD), one of the most important bacterial diseases affecting cultured salmonids. BKD can be transmitted horizontally from fish to fish and vertically within the egg.
