PDV belongs to the genus Ilarvirus of the family Bromoviridae; its genome consists of three segments of positive single-stranded RNA molecules. The coat protein (24 kDa) is required for the initiation of RNA replication, encapsidation, cell-to-cell movement, and systemic spread of the virus.
