PPV belongs to the genus Potyvirus of the family Potyviridae and is the causal agent of sharka disease of stone fruits crops. PPV genome consists of a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA encapsidated by a single glycosylated coat protein (34 kDa). This protein is also involved in systemic movement of the virus.
